Making Your Perfect Wedding Registry

Michael’s Grandma asked for our registry just one month after we got engaged. She wanted to get us an engagement gift! We didn’t really realize this was a thing, and we hadn’t thought about making a registry at all. Now that we knew, we were really excited! We love cooking together, and we cannot wait to host guests in our first home. Our wedding registry would be the perfect time to stock up on unique cooking gadgets and anything we might want to be a great host to our friends and family when they visit.

I honestly had no idea what to put on the registry. Do you ask your college friends to buy you a toaster as a wedding gift? Are Grandma and Grandpa going to show up to the ceremony with bath towels and shower curtains? The registry felt a little odd to me, and my mom had told me that most people will just end up gifting money anyway. Initially, the wedding registry felt like a list of options for gifts that our grandparents, and maybe a great aunt or uncle, would be excited to buy us.

Michael absolutely did not feel this way.

Michael was so excited to make our registry. He told me about this great home pizza oven that he used on a trip to California to visit his friend, and he sent me the link to a frozen margarita maker that we just had to have. When I realized that we could totally use our wedding registry as the coolest Christmas list ever, I also felt really excited. So, we had a video call that night and made our first draft of our wedding registry.

The First Draft of Our Wedding Registry

The first draft of our wedding registry was on a shared spreadsheet. Me and Michael worked together one night to find everything we could possibly want in our first home. It took hours and a few disagreements to make it through. It was exciting though. Picking out the wine glasses that our friends would be sipping from during every visit to our home felt so surreal.

Our first registry had a column for the name of an item and an estimated price. Then, there was a column for a link (once we found the exact one we wanted) and the actual price of the item. At the end of our sheet, we had the average price of the items of our registry, the median price, and the total price of all of the items added together.

Our first draft of our registry had 73 items on it. Those items came to a total of $6,865. There was an average price of $95/gift, and the median price was $65.

Some Things We Learned While Making Our Registry

  1. Our wedding is over a year away, which is something we tried to consider when we made our registry. What would we have already? What could we wait to get? What might we want now to hold onto until we have our dream home one day?
  2. There were some items on our list that we really wanted to be easy to replace. Dinner plates and wine glasses were the most important. If a wine glass breaks, we want to be able to buy a replacement so that we don’t ruin the set and end up with a cabinet of mismatched glasses.
  3. Sometimes it is worth splurging. Sometimes it is not, and you are just feeling overexcited. Michael saw an online video about cool cocktails that can be made using a smoker. The first smoker he added to our registry was almost $75 more than the one we now have on there.
  4. It is okay to put a few expensive gifts on there. We had originally tried to avoid putting really expensive gifts on our registry. However, if a family of five comes to your wedding or if friends want to go in on a gift together, this could be the perfect time to finally get your dream gift. Also, if no one wants to buy it, they won’t. That’s fine!

We are finally at the point where we have finalized and shared our registry on our website. We cannot give an honest review on these items yet, because we do not have them. However, we were pretty selective with our list, so they should be great! If you are making your own wedding registry, we thought it might be helpful to see what we put on ours.
